Tourism & Leisure

The following are significant projects in the tourism and leisure sector:-

New Travelodge

A new £2M Travelodge hotel has been built at Kingsland near A55 Junction 1, close to the port and town centre. It has 54 bedrooms, and opened in September 2007 creating 15 new jobs. It was built on a brownfield site previously occupied by various vacant / derelict buildings.

Trearddur Bay Hotel

A new £2M conference centre has been developed adjacent to the hotel, providing high quality event facilities in the Holyhead area.

Celtic Gateway Bridge & Left Luggage

The new Celtic Gateway footbridge over the Inner Harbour opened in October 2006, making it far easier for ferry, railway, cruise ship, and steam train excursion passengers to access the town centre. A left luggage facility has been operated by the Town Council at the ferry terminal / railway station since January 2007, allowing passengers to leave their luggage and explore the town.

Maritime Museum Expansion

A major museum improvement scheme has recently been completed. One element of the project involved adapting the old wartime air raid shelter to create a "Holyhead at War" exhibition area and extending it to create an artefacts room. The other element involved reconfiguring the museum to provide a high quality cafe/bistro overlooking the harbour, including a decked external seating area.

The group are now proposing the establishment of a visitor railway that would eventually extend between the Breakwater Country Park and the lighthouse at the end of the Breakwater. www.holyheadbreakwater.com

Visitor Information Boards

A series of visitor information maps and heritage interpretation panels was installed at various locations in Holyhead during 2005. Further panels are now proposed in other locations.

HSS Ferry Tourism Display

A visitor information area featuring Anglesey, Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire was installed on the HSS ferry in early 2005 as a means of generating additional visits by ferry users.

Holyhead Marina

A major marina is being built in the outer harbour, on the northern side of the town. There are currently about 200 pontoon berths, which will be increased over time to about 500. An onshore development next to the marina has recently been completed, which provides marina facilities and commercial units on the ground floor and high quality residential units on the upper floors.

Internet Café

A new internet café opened in Holyhead in December 2005.
