Town Centre Regeneration

Holyhead Town Centre is the focus of a number of different regeneration initiatives. The main current or planned schemes are summarized below:-

Town Enhancements

Various small scale initiatives are being taken to improve the appearence and appeal of the town centre, including providing flower beds and hanging baskets, flower and tree planters, street bunting, flags and Christmas lights.

Signs and Information Boards

Signage has been identified as a deficiency and is being improved. A number of visitor maps and interpretation boards have been installed. Further signage improvements are planned to help direct people from car parks and to places of interest.

Townscape Heritage Initiative

Much of the town centre is designated as a historic Conservation Area. A Stage 2 application by the County Council to the Heritage Lottery Fund to provide £1M towards property improvements within this area has been successful, and details are now being finalised with a view to the scheme becoming operational by August 2010. Information about the Townscape Heritage Initiative scheme can be viewed on www.hlf.org.uk

  • Support for clearing derelict buildings at Kingsland Road
  • Development of a landmark building next to the Bridge landing point

Part of the funding package involved revenue funding to pay for regeneration staff and an activities budget to provide for events and marketing (including this website)This scheme has also funded new traffic arrangements in Stanley Street and Williams Street.

Anglesey Three Towns Physical Regeneration Programme

A second phase of town centre regeneration works and activities has now started with a value of about £5M. The new scheme also now covers Llangefni and Amlwch, and is part of a package bid for North West Wales led by the Welsh Assembly which has received EU funding approval. The proposals for Holyhead include signage, environmental improvements, a townscape heritage project, support for the redevelopment of vacant property, and town centre management in the period up to 2013. The first phase of works involves improvements to the public realm and frontages at Marine Square.
